How to change your life and become a fitness instructor

For most people, fitness is a hobby that is fun, but does not bring money. However, it is quite possible to make a hobby your main profession, if you are tired of your usual work and have long wanted to change it. But in order to count on success, enthusiasm for fitness alone is not enough. Where do you study for a coach? What knowledge, skills and personal qualities are necessary for successful work? We will understand these issues in more detail.

Fitness instructor: necessary skills

Fitness instructor: necessary skills

To work as a fitness trainer, you need to have a certain amount of knowledge. A good instructor should know and be able to do the following:

understand the physiology and anatomy of man;
have an idea of the biomechanical and biochemical processes occurring in the body;
have knowledge in the field of nutraceuticals and sports nutrition;
know the physiological, anatomical and psychological characteristics of a person in different age periods;
be able to assess the physical condition of a person, determine the body type, the level of metabolism, track biometrics;
to be able to handle sports equipment, to understand the device and the principles of operation of simulators;
know the safety regulations;
be able to provide first aid;
know the anatomical and physiological characteristics of childhood and have pedagogical skills to work in children's and adolescent fitness groups.

Basic knowledge can be obtained at training courses for fitness instructors. It is also necessary to study specialized literature, watch training videos, attend special trainings, participate in webinars.

Personality trainer

In addition to professional knowledge and skills, personal qualities of a coach are important. In the process of working with his wards, the instructor acts in different roles: he and the teacher, and the leader, as well as a psychologist, guardian and an example to follow. In order to successfully realize himself in each role, he needs to possess a set of certain personality traits.

A successful coach is always a good organizer. As a professional, a fitness trainer is obliged not only to establish effective work in the gym, but also to plan the entire training process step by step. The business qualities that should be inherent to an instructor are criticality, discipline, developed logical thinking, practicality, exactingness, responsibility, self-confidence, the ability to manage people.
In sports and coaching work, volitional qualities of the personality play an important role: self-discipline, self-control, endurance, determination, purposefulness. Essential minus, if the coach is impatient: he drives the students, forces the load, ignores the principle of gradualness. This can result in injury, overtraining, health problems. You can not demonstrate frivolous attitude to their duties: to be late for classes, to cancel training, to come unprepared.
The work of a coach involves constant contact with people. Therefore, any representative of this profession simply needs to possess advanced communication skills. It should be an open, sociable person, inspiring confidence and sympathy. The most important qualities for a coach are: politeness, tact, friendliness, emotional stability, the ability to correct the emotional state of other people and create the right atmosphere in a group.
The coach is responsible for his appearance. Often, when a person is perceived as a person, it is the appearance that is decisive. A fitness instructor does not have to be “super-pumped,” but he must be in excellent physical shape. If a person who teaches fitness looks unsportsmanlike himself, this lowers his credibility. A mandatory requirement when working with people is to be neat, tidy, fit.
An important quality for a trainer is the ability to distribute attention. Especially it concerns instructors of group fitness programs. When a coach works with a group, he must simultaneously control a large number of objects. At the same time, the trainer shows the exercises, monitors the performance technique, controls his facial expressions, describes the actions and oversees the whole group: he picks up the emotional mood, notices errors in his movements, tries to understand how well the material is learned.
The trainer must be able to use his voice, speak intelligently and clearly. For an instructor of aerobic and dance training, it is important to have a developed ear for music and a sense of rhythm.

A professional trainer should constantly engage in self-education: read special literature, watch videos, attend classes of colleagues, seminars and fitness conferences.

Instructors of group and individual fitness programs

Instructors of group and individual fitness programs

There are different forms of work with visitors to fitness clubs: individual, group, in mini-groups. Each form has its own characteristics. With individual work with the client, the trainer's attention is directed to one person. He is obliged to accurately assess the state of health and the level of sports training of his ward. Taking into account the individual characteristics of the client, a personal fitness program is compiled. Its performance is clearly controlled by the trainer. The specialist is fully responsible for the safety and effectiveness of training. The personality of the coach is for the student the most important (perhaps even decisive) factor affecting the effectiveness of the entire training process.

Among the group fitness programs are the most popular aerobic and dance. There are also group strength training, mixed (cardio + power load), low impact (Pilates, callanetics, etc.). Today in fitness there are a huge number of areas: it is very difficult to become a generalist who understands all group programs. It is worth starting with basic knowledge and skills: to master classical and step aerobics. It should be noted that today any fitness program of aerobic or aerobic-power orientation can be taught both in a group and individually. Modern fitness clubs offer personal training in dance styles, power classes, aerobics, yoga, etc.

Occupation fitness trainer: where to study?

Building a professional career in the field of fitness requires higher physical education or medical education. For admission to the institute of physical culture and sports will have to pass standards for general physical training. In addition, universities take into account the Unified State Exam scores in some disciplines – usually it is biology, chemistry, Russian language. Each university sets its minimum threshold for admission. In addition to sports institutes, there are also faculties of physical culture and sports at other universities – military, pedagogical. A frequent phenomenon is receiving sports education as a second higher education, but in this case, training is carried out only on a paid basis.

You can work as a fitness instructor and without a higher education. This option is suitable for those who do not claim to be a highly qualified specialist and do not plan to build a serious career in the sports and fitness industry. To work as an instructor in an ordinary sports club, it is enough to complete special courses and then independently improve your level of knowledge by reading literature, communicating with colleagues, attending seminars, etc. Constantly engaged in self-development is necessary for those who have a diploma of higher education. The university provides good fundamental training in key disciplines, but in the future it will be necessary to independently develop practical skills, deepen knowledge, track fitness trends, master new areas, and specialize in certain areas.
